Claremont Hotel - Luxury in the East Bay

When it's time for that extra-special California getaway, consider a stay at the Claremont Hotel, which has been charming visitors since 1915.

You've seen this type of hotel before - maybe on the Travel Channel or in the pages of a major travel magazine when they do their lists of the world's best hotels. These kinds of hotels share a certain sense of style and place, an elegance that is evident from your first turn into the parking lot. This is one of those places that you make a mental note to be sure and stay sometime when you can spare a little extra time and money.

The Claremont has held its commanding view of the San Francisco Bay since 1915 and in fact caught the attention of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who referred to it as "...one of the few hotels in the world with warmth, character and charm." The hotel, in fact, looks almost like a castle on a hill, a stately manor that seems more European in flavor and completely dominating the surrounding real estate. Walk into the luxurious high-ceiling lobby past the high-end retail shops and you discover a quiet sophistication that will be the hallmark of your unforgettable getaway.

The hotel is tucked away on a 22-acre parcel of prime view property just minutes from downtown Berkeley and the nearby University of California. Many of the rooms at the Claremont offer a panoramic view of the bay and downtown San Francisco. If you look across the bay, you realize you're pretty darn close to the big city -- but just far enough away to avoid the bustle. The hotel's gardens and well manicured grounds feel more like a country estate that a big-city hotel.

We arrived at our room on the fourth floor to discover a spacious unit with plenty of room for two queen beds, a desk area, an entertainment area with a 37-inch flat-screen television and lots of open space in the middle of the room. An easy chair was positioned for television viewing. The windows were a little smaller than usual but the view was incredible and featured many famous landmarks in the San Francisco Bay area. The room had a more than adequate bath area with a closed-in tub/shower, marble vanity and stylish wall designs. The verdict: A comfortable, spacious room but just a small part of the charm of staying at the Claremont.

A big attraction at the Claremont is the Club at the Claremont, where guests have exclusive access to recreational resources popular with the Bay area elite. The facilities include two 25-meter heated swimming pools, an Olympic-size lap pool, a children's wading area, a jet-stream whirlpool hot tub and four saunas. There also is a 20,000-square-foot fitness area with the latest in state-of-the-art exercise equipment. Tennis courts are nearby and, whenever there is sunny weather, they are in constant use.

For those who visit a luxury hotel simply to be pampered, the Claremont offers Spa Claremont, named by Elle Magazine as one of the top 20 spas in the country. This is not your run-of-the-mill spa - you'll find a 20,000-square-foot facility with 32 treatment rooms including separate facilities for men and women.

We did not sample the formal dining at the Claremont - although the Meritage is reputed to offer scrumptious California cuisine expertly prepared by Chef Josh Thomsen - but we did stop by the Paragon Bar & Café for some light sandwiches and drinks. This restaurant seems to be quite a popular place for Bay area singles and couples to mingle while they enjoy spectacular views of the bay.

The Claremont is well-situated for you to drive into San Francisco, or perhaps take advantage of the BART train that will take you across the bay to where you can use trolley cars and cabs to get around downtown. But you might also consider spending a little time right in Berkeley, a city you'll likely remember as the center of the "counter-culture" in the Sixties that, to this day, retains that same independent spirit.

Today Berkeley is quite a destination for the visitor interested in performing or visual or culinary arts. Addison Street, for example, boasts live theater and music most every night. Restaurants are plentiful, many focusing on food that is fresh, local and organic.

Berkeley also offers hiking and biking trails along the bay as well as several regional parks. History buffs will find that Berkeley features dozens of historic monuments and architectural treasures, many found on the University of California campus which is definitely worth a stroll while you're in the area. Free campus tours are held daily, seven days a week and the 90-minute walking tours offer a great insight into campus and student life at Cal.

UC Berkeley has one of the finest botanical gardens in the country where you will find 13,000 species grouped according to regions of the world. The UC Botanical Garden also has many plants native to California. Be sure and bring a lunch that you can enjoy at one of the picnic tables available in the gardens

First-time visitors to Berkeley will be interested to know there are several other tours available, including a number of walking tours that allow you to get a little exercise and, at the same time, learn about this fascinating city. For example, the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association has published a booklet entitled "41 Walking Tours of Berkeley" featuring tours through specific neighborhoods, and at certain times of the year the association sponsors guided walking tours. The Berkeley Historical Society also offers walking tours throughout Berkeley in the spring and fall.

The beer-drinkers in your group will no doubt want to visit the Pyramid Alehouse, home of the award-winning Pyramid Ales and Lagers, and Thomas Kemper Soda. Tours are 45 minutes long and explain the brewing process, the history of Pyramid Breweries, and offer visitors samples of these popular beverages.

Another favorite attraction in the area is the USS Hornet Museum in Alemeda where you can explore an authentically restored aircraft carrier. Visitors can tour the ship from top to bottom and explore every nook and cranny. A national Historical Landmark, the USS Hornet participated in World War II and the Apollo 11 moon mission. The ship also has lots of aircraft exhibits and a display focused on the Apollo program.

Of course, many visitors to the Claremont are quite content to stay on-site and soak up all the luxury during their entire stay. And, with a hotel and grounds designed to overwhelm the senses, who can blame them?

Top 5 Most Expensive Luxury Hotel Rooms

Everyone has a personal record for the amount they've spent on a hotel room. Whether it was for a one-off treat or just because everywhere else in town was full, most people have sampled a luxury hotel at one point or another. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes it hurts. In either case, when the bill came, you probably didn't want to look!

But for the super rich, the cost of our so-called luxury accommodation is just part of the package. All around the world, luxury hotel suites are designed to cater to this elite, with every imaginable feature, priceless furnishings, lavish service, and a price to match. These boutique hotels are the playgrounds of the rich and famous when they travel abroad - celebrities, millionaires, pop stars, heads of state and royalty are the most frequent residents...Some of them pay and others are invited. Here are five of the most expensive luxury hotel suites in the world.

Presidential Suite, Hotel Martinez

Price: $18,500 a night

Cannes is Europe's answer to Hollywood, so it's no surprise that it contains a luxury hotel suite with this kind of price tag. Decorated in an Art Deco style, it measures 8,000 square feet in total. The wraparound terrace (which can hold over 100 people) is 2000 square feet on its own, and has views of the entire Bay of Cannes. Other features include a Turkish bath, personal sauna, 24 hour on call butler and a free bar - though breakfast is not included in your bill.

Guests at this famous hotel have included Jodie Foster, Francis Ford Coppola and Monica Belluci. One Saudi sheik liked the Presidential Suite so much that he wanted to hire it out for five years. The hotel, confident of being able to fill the suite in spite of its price, refused his request.

Imperial Suite, President Wilson Hotel, Geneva

Price: $23,000 a night

You pay for security as much as luxury at this famous hotel suite in Geneva. Positioned next to the United Nations Headquarters and designed for traveling heads of state, the Imperial Suite features bullet proof glass and bedside alarm buttons, and can only be reached by a private elevator.

With views of Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, the suite contains five bathrooms, four bedrooms, a cocktail lounge, a library, its own Steinway grand piano and a mahogany dining table that can comfortably seat 26 guests. It costs approximately $23,000 a night. Breakfast is not included but the service can't be argued with - when one guest requested a bed that could not fit in the lift, the hotel hired a crane to get it in the bedroom.

The Bridge Suite, Atlantis Hotel, Paradise Island

Price: $25,000 a night

The Bridge Suite sits on top of the bridge that connects the two Royal Towers in this resort on the aptly named Paradise Island. For $25,000 a night you get your own butler, entertainment centre, 50-foot bar lounge, marble baths and a décor described as conveying "regal majesty" by the hotel staff. For regal majesty, read lots of gilded mirrors and windows, golden sofas, and a ten-foot four-poster bed with hand-painted linen sheets. Subdued and tasteful it isn't, but if you like to see some eye-watering opulence in your five figure luxury hotel suite, this may be the one for you.

Ty Warner Penthouse, Four Seasons Hotel, New York

Price: $30,000

This boutique hotel spared no expense when it came to furnishing the penthouse on its 52nd floor. Gold thread curtains, walls inlaid with mother of pearl, onyx bathroom floors, and even a shark skin coffee table are all part of the package here, along with stunning views over Manhattan and even a waterfall in the so-called Zen room. For those who like a little more than the standard room service, this luxury hotel suite comes with unlimited treatments from an in-house masseuse, a butler on 24 hour duty and a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce.

Hugh Hefner Sky Villa, Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas

Price: $40,000

Perhaps it's no surprise that Hugh Hefner's name is attached to the ultimate in luxury hotel decadence. At a jaw dropping $40,000 a night, the Hugh Hefner Sky Villa is the world's most expensive hotel suite, located (appropriately enough) in the Fantasy Tower of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Amongst the eccentric extras are an eight foot revolving bed with ceiling mirrors, an indoor waterfall, an exercise room, sauna, and a terrace pool projecting out over the edge of the Fantasy Tower with the Playboy Bunny logo stamped firmly in the center.

Holiday Accommodation Means Luxury Hotel Discounts This Year

Luxury hotels for travelers can be a great option, but there are also drawbacks as far as we're concerned. It's a little hard to define the pluses and minuses because what might be a plus for you could be something that would turn another traveler off.

Luxury hotels will probably be the most expensive option for holiday accommodation. They're great for business people on an expense account, but harder on the average travel budget. One thing to consider here is that when the global economy takes a downturn, these luxury places suffer along with everyone else. They start offering discounted rates or upgrades.

So if you'd love to stay in a luxury hotel, but you think your budget just wouldn't allow it... you might want to check for special offers before you settle for something less. Another way to save is to head for these places on weekends or holiday periods when the business people who generally occupy them are home or on holiday themselves.

Most of the time you will find those luxury hotels in cities. They offer a uniformity... You know exactly what you're going to get. They will have phones and TVs and Internet connections. (Though interestingly enough, those Internet connections often come at a surprisingly high price!)

You will get lots of lotions and shampoos and luxury fluffy towels. There will be a restaurant in the hotel... sometimes two or three. You'll get front desks that are staffed 24/7 with multilingual desk clerks, and you'll get a concierge and doormen.

Maybe you opt for that luxury place because you want that central location. Even if you're the type of traveler who prefers small local places with lots of cultural immersion... once in a while, a luxury place can make for a nice refuge from the chaotic streets of a foreign city... and a little break from diving right into the local culture.

The uniformity and sheltered feeling are also among the downsides of staying in a luxury hotel. Aside from costing you more than staying in a small local hotel would... luxury hotels DO cushion you from the culture that you traveled to see... maybe too much. That really nice room could be anywhere in the world.... That uniformity can be a little TOO much the same.

Our advice is if you find it expedient to stay in a hotel like this... at least get out on the street for lunch and dinner. They might have a great restaurant, but you'll get something much more authentic, and probably more reasonably priced, in a restaurant down the street among the locals.

Most of these hotels do not include breakfast in the price of the room, but they do have coffee and tea in your room... So grab a cup as you get dressed in the morning, then skip the expensive breakfast buffet and wander out onto the street to find breakfast. Stand up at a pasticceria (a pastry shop) in Italy for cappuccino and biscotti...

Find a little local restaurant in Budapest, grab a table outside and order Kifli (a traditional Hungarian pastry) with cheeses, cold cuts or jam and honey... Have a Danish pastry and coffee in Denmark. Anything local will cost you less and be more fun.

Luxury hotels serve a great purpose for all kinds of travelers at different times during their travels... look at your itinerary and travel goals, and decide when one works for you.
